Winner of Terrace Week - The Block,  Season 14

Six days to transform a concrete building site into a high-end penthouse retreat is just the challenge our team thrive on. We were delighted to be engaged by the lovable Norm and Jess, to design and build their penthouse terrace, on Australia’s top rating TV renovation show, The Block. Throw in a camera crew, roving foremen, a congested work site and a tight budget and we had an intensity that only The Block could provide!

The terrace graced the roof of St Kilda's infamous Gatwick Private Hotel. With panoramic views of the beach, city and iconic Fitzroy Street, it was paramount that these vistas were maximised. Honouring the building’s facade and the eclectic location, our team created zones within the terrace to bring interest, versatility and the penthouse luxury that the space demanded.

The terrace provides an extension to the lifestyle the apartment provides for and showcased several hero pieces designed or sourced by the Paal Grant Designs team. These included our round Gatwick dining table; custom made in black powder-coated steel and blackbutt timber. Hovering overhead was visual artist Katie McKinnon's ethereal light installation; Parrotfish Hanging Planter. This was accompanied by the dramatic Wattle Bird back-lit art screen. Both pieces provided an illuminating backdrop to the unique dining space.

Evoking the relaxed St Kilda vibe was the contemporary MamaGreen outdoor lounge, sourced from Melbourne’s Rock & Stone, accompanied by our own custom-made Gatwick coffee table. This was complemented with digitally printed outdoor cushions, featuring the work of Indigenous artists from local textile creators, Willie Weston. Whilst the BBQ and bar, topped with Calacatta marble deftly screams 'Party at the penthouse!'.

Together with the blue stone paving and blackbutt decking, the artificial turf from APT Asia Pacific defines the area. Whether it be observing the sunset or people watching on Fitzroy Street, our up-lit outdoor sculpture created a space to sit, observe and reflect.

We were thrilled to receive a perfect score of 10 from each judge, taking out terrace week! But most importantly, it was a resounding win for the incredibly hard-working and deserved contestants Norm and Jess. Best of luck at the Auction guys!
