the block
daylesford- HOUSE 5
Engaged by contestants, Robby and Mat for The Block, we took on the
challenge of transforming over 1000m2 of dirt into something
extraordinary. With the clock ticking and budgets shifting, our objective
was to design a space that is not only visually appealing, but which
ultimately offers the optimum setting for entertaining guests, time spent
with family or simply enjoying peaceful moments outdoors.
The project scope included integrating a Pickleball court and an
impressive Trendz fireplace, both of which were awarded to the team
during the competition. To enhance these hardscape elements, a
magnificent 25-year-old Bottle Tree from Palm Life was selected to
anchor the landscape.
Embracing the yard’s natural slope, we created sweeping slabs of lush
lawn and curved garden beds, defined by Straightcurve edging to
provide clean lines and structural clarity. Basalt steppers and curved
aggregate pathways were interspersed with vibrant dichondra and a
thoughtfully selected array of native and deciduous plants, ensuring
year-round color and texture. Whilst placement of numerous boulders
introduced organic height & interest.

Despite being narrowly beaten by a rival contestant’s bonus point, the garden received an impressive 9.5/10 from all four judges. Technically, it was the winning garden of Backyard Week, but a quirky competition twist — a secret bonus point — tipped the scales. Regardless, the design’s cohesive features elevate both the aesthetic and functional qualities of the outdoor space, perfectly embodying the relaxed yet refined atmosphere that defines Daylesford.
